I've just uploaded some new audio of my brief vocal piece, [shell], performed by my super-close friend, composer and mezzo, Nina Whiteman.
[shell] was originally written for a concert of new vocal pieces celebrating the contributions of Dr Laura Tunbridge (now Prof) to the University of Manchester, before she took up her current position at the University of Oxford. The piece takes the phonetic material from Laura's name and scrambles it into a new statistically controlled behaviour, where patterns of phonemes are collided with patterns of glottal position - a kind of new alien language.
I've been absolutely amazed that this tiny little piece as begun a little life outside of this initial context. Nina has performed the piece in concert several times now and it's really beginning to become her own, which has been amazing to see/hear. I'm desperate to develop this into something more substantial for Nina at the nearest opportunity - watch the upcoming projects page for news!
